Spec Commons

About Spec Commons

Spec Commons gives precise technical definitions permanent addresses. A developer or agent can publish a convention, include its URL in integration instructions, and let another implementer work from the same exact meaning.

Even a convention used by one application can benefit from a durable definition. The registry grows from definitions needed by this project and other projects using it.

The publication promise

Published records remain unchanged. Corrections and alternatives receive new URLs and link to their parents. Publication establishes the meaning of that particular definition; it does not certify technical quality, novelty, ownership or suitability.

The initial entries define the registry's own timestamps and record schema. We use those definitions in this service.

Public content and preservation

Only publish material you have the right to make public. Everything submitted is publicly readable and downloadable. Do not submit secrets or personal information. Publisher identifiers are pseudonymous and do not verify a person's identity.

Save the JSON export to preserve a complete record independently. The Markdown export contains the definition text. Permanence is a service commitment; keep your own copies of definitions your systems depend on.

Privacy

This site has no advertising, analytics scripts or tracking cookies. Reading needs no account. Publication uses a secret token stored as a SHA-256 hash in the service's database. The service uses request IP addresses for short-lived rate limiting; they are not stored in definition records. Cloudflare processes requests as the hosting provider and may retain operational data under its own policies.
